Queen Victoria 1873 St George & Shield Gold Sovereign Pair
The 1873 Sovereign Pair â struck 150 years ago!
A genuine artefact of the Australian Gold Rush Era, and an important piece of Australiaâs currency history, we are delighted to present the Queen Victoria 1873 St George & Shield Gold Sovereign Pair. Prestigious, historic, beautiful and important, this lavish presentation is also extremely exclusive. The limited edition is a mere FIFTY sets!
Among the worldâs most famous designsâŠ
Struck exactly 150 years ago, the two sovereigns found in this set represent some of the most beloved, iconic designs in history. Benedetto Pistrucciâs St George motif is a masterpiece of neoâclassical art, whilst the armorial magnificence of Jean Baptiste Merlenâs Shield design is famous worldwide. Both coins bear the original effigy of Queen Victoria â the exquisite Young Head portrait by William Wyon, enshrining the youthful beauty of the monarch in 22âcarat gold.
Low mintages â very scarce in any grade âŠ
Australian sovereigns of Queen Victoria were issued in numbers considered tiny by modern standards. The 1873 St George & Shield Sovereigns were no exception to the rule. Importantly, in the 150 years since struck, a vast majority have been lost, withdrawn from circulation and recycled, or melted for the gold value. As they were genuine circulation coins, surviving examples tend to be wellâworn, meaning that Queen Victoria sovereigns are generally scarce in better grade. There is no doubt that the 1873 St George & Shield Sovereigns are very scarce in superior quality, as here.
Outstanding qualityâŠ
Struck the Melbourne and Sydney Mints (mints of our choice), the 1873 St George and 1873 Shield Sovereigns found in this prestigious presentation are notable for the superb state of preservation. Scarce and highly desirable in such lovely condition, both coins grade from Extremely Fine to about Uncirculated.

Sure to be sought after worldwide, the 1873 St George & Shield Gold Sovereign Pair is to be enjoyed by the privileged few. The limited edition has been restricted to a mere FIFTY sets â each presented within a timber case with an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
